3 DAYS MUHAVURA VOLCANO HIKE

Mount Muhabura, also known as Mount Muhavura, is an inactive volcano in the Virunga Mountains on the border between Rwanda and Uganda. At 4,127 metres (13,540 ft) Muhabura is the third highest of the eight major mountains of the mountain range, which is a part of the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. Its summit contains a small crater lake.

Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe Airport    

Upon the arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be welcomed by our company representatives, and you will then be transfered to Kampala at the hotel to relax and refresh. Kololo Courts/Holiday Express hotel/Rochester hotel.

Embark on the 8 hour journey to Kisoro. Make a stopover at the equator to take some photos and in Mbarara town for lunch at Café Havana/Agip motel/Shaheen restaurant. After reaching Kisoro town, it is 14km to Mgahinga national park. This park is famous for mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Check in at the lodge.

You will have a forest walk in Mgahinga forest and enjoy a fresh feeling of a natural forest. The sweet melodies of birds up in the trees, the quiet and cool environment gives you a fresh feeling. A forest walk is the best walk to explore and uncover all the hidden treasures of this small park. Also, walking is an opportunity to spot some animals and birds at a close range. Among the animals expect to see golden monkeys, gorillas, elephants, buffalos to name but a few. Also look out for the Rwenzori turaco which is a favourite for many tourists. Dinner and overnight stay Mount Gahinga lodge.

Day 2: Hiking

Have your early morning breakfast at 6:30am, report to Ntebeko visitor centre and clear for hiking mount Muhabura. The hike starts at 7:00am and it takes about 6-8 hours depending on hiker’s fitness.

Mount Muhabura is the steepest of the volcano ranges with its first resting point at 3,116m above sea level, the second is at 3,855m and the summit is at 4,127m. It offers spectacular views of beautiful craters and vast plains on the slopes where gorillas dwell. The breath-taking view of the twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera literally sweep you off your feet.

One of the most interesting aspects of hiking mount Muhabura is that near its summit there is a gorgeous crater lake that adds spunk to the entire experience. While at the summit you can ably view 5 other volcanoes that your guide will identify by name.

After decent, you will proceed to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay Mount Gahinga lodge. 

Day 3: Depart to Kampala

After your morning breakfast at 8:00am, go for the Batwa trail experience. Spend some time with Batwa pygmies for a memorable cultural performance. In this experience, Batwa pygmies guide you into Mgahinga forest to learn and practice their traditional forest activities such as collecting honey, picking medicinal herbs, hunting, picking fruits and offering sacrifice in caves. Traditional songs and dances are performed which give you an extensive understanding of Batwa.

After the Batwa trail, check out of the lodge. Proceed to Kisoro town for a tour around the town. After the tour, you will have lunch in Kisoro town at Coffee Pot café/Terraceland restaurant/Gorilla Highland Café. Embark on the journey to Kampala and you will be dropped at the location of your choice in Kampala or at the Airport for your departure flight.
